Who has seen "Who Killed the Electric Car?" What did you think? Would you have bought an EV1? Did you buy an EV1 and it was repo-ed? What about those NEV's, the Neighborhood Electric Vehicles. Are those practical for your lifestyle? Then, of course, there's the ubiquitous Tesla, the superstar of an electric car. How practical is that, and do you think it shows that electric power is ready for the big time?
As I said in response to your post in the ethanol thread, we're focusing our attention on the wrong things. If we just spent a little time focused on improving battery efficiency, I bet it could be a completely viable alternative fuel within five years...or less! Look at how well GM's ill-fated EV-1 performed. Great range, speed, etc. Homebuilts are great for those willing to sacrifice convenience, but if EV's are going to really take off we need lighter and more efficient batteries, it's true.
Incidentally, I'm one of those willing to sacrifice. I'd rather save money on gas and maintenance than be able to pick up and drive to Lawrence whenever I feel like it (which I don't often, anyway).
