What's up with ethanol? It's good for you, it's bad for you, it's the answer, it's more of the same. It seems like there are reports saying everything from ethanol will save us to ethanol is the nectar of satan. What do you think?

Reports are showing up saying that it takes more energy to make "Ethanol" than what you can get out of it. Low range, low power, hard to find, no thanks!

That's what I've heard, too. I don't know why the powers-that-be seem bent on promoting alternative fuels that are so inefficient (hydrogen being the other that comes to mind). Maybe it's just my inner-conspiracy-theorist speaking, but doesn't it seem like the public is kind of being pointed in the wrong direction? We should be focusing our energies on improving solar and battery powers, rather than promoting fuels like ethanol or hydrogen that require such inefficient and expensive infrastructures. Ethanol may save money and mileage, but like you said it costs so much to supply it that it's potentially more damaging than traditional gasoline. Hydrogen, meanwhile, is super-clean but right now isn't any cheaper than gas. Meanwhile electric power is cheap, completely clean, and infinitely abundant. Am I missing something here?
