This is a good place to introduce ourselves. I'll start. First of all, my name is Bobby Bierley and I am the owner and operator of www.biggreencity.com, as well as this forum. You'll see me around here from time to time going by my other name, "Admin." Consider it my "big boy hat," and when I'm wearing it I'm trying to be all responsible and stuff and tend to administrative matters on the board. But when I'm "thisgreenlife," I'm going to be posting comments and responses just like everyone else. I haven't been "officially green" for that long as of this posting, but I've always been a compassionate and nature-friendly person. It's only recently, during 2006, that I started to wake up to some of the truths about climate change, and our impact as a species and a civilization on this planet. Late in '06 I got the idea for Big Green City, imagining it to be a collection of region- or city-specific resources that people all across the country--even the world--could access. It was hard to find green places to shop, to eat, to play, and it made it difficult to get started on the green path. That's why I created Big Green City, was in hopes that by bringing these resources together I could help more people who, like me, might be looking for ways they can start making a positive difference. I hope it's helpful, and I hope these forums flourish as Kansas City grows and its citizens become more green-aware.

Hello Bobby! My name is Wanda Parmenter. I am the mother of 2 and the grandmother of 4 soon to be 5. In the past year I have become greatly aware of the importance of being "green-aware". I have a long way to go and a lot to learn on my journey down the green path and I am hoping this site can help me along the way. As I learn I will be glad to share my learning with those who are also traveling down this path. We all have to become aware and do our share for ourselves, our children, our grandchildren and all who follow us on this wonderful place called planet Earth!
I am not a computer wiz and I am not at all sure I understand how to fully utilize this web site. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I truely an a newbe!

Hi Wanda! I'm Emily. So glad you joined our little community!!! My favorite places on the main website are the business listings (so I can support green businesses in KC), and the calendar. Also, if you know of any businesses that should be added please share with the rest of us! I'm hoping to find environmentally friendly pet products in the area.

Hello Wanda, great to have you! Congratulations on the soon-to-be grandchild, and thank you for taking an interest in the environment. I don't expect you'll find everything you need to live an eco-friendly life on Big Green City, but I sincerely hope it helps you on a daily basis to stay motivated and informed. I want this site to be a community above all things, so any input you have will certainly be appreciated! And tell your friends, because the more people involved the more valuable this site will be for everyone.
As for being a computer wiz, hopefully there's not much need for it here. I want to keep the site as easy and straightforward as possible, but if there's every anything you have a question about you can either email me at admin@biggreencity.com or post a question here in the forum (either under whatever topic seems appropriate or in the "urgent questions" section). Thanks Wanda and good luck!

Hi, my name is Gina and I'm a green-a-holic! (Sorry, couldn't resist, haha. Every time I post an intro thread on a message board I feel like I'm introducing myself at a 12 step program or something). I'm a stay at home mom of two. I'm taking steps to living a green lifestyle. It's a slow process, and sometimes a little expensive, but I'm getting there! And, I'm addicted to roller skating. ;D

Hey there, Gina, glad to have you! As you can see the forum isn't getting much activity but hopefully it will pick up over time. We'd love to hear some of the steps you're taking in your green life, because we can all learn from each other. If you're not that familiar with using a forum like this, feel free to ask any questions you have. You can even send me an email ( admin@biggreencity.com)and I'll do my best to help you out. I'd love to see some real discussions start happening here, because I believe that community involvement is at the heart of the green movement. (You'll probably get sick of hearing me talk about that!) Again, we're glad you're a part of "the City!" ;D

Hi Gina! Welcome to our support group I hear you about expensive! I've been trying to find ways to create some cleaning products and other things at home because the organic brands can really cost you. My husband just got me a book called Clean & Green. I'm hoping that will give me some good ideas. If you have any tips on cleaning or dog products I'd love to know! Emily

I'll have to get a copy of Clean & Green. To answer thisgreenlife, I'm somewhat familiar with proboards, but thanks! It's good that you offer that to new guests because a lot of people have never even heard of probaords before, and some don't feel comfortable asking questions. The steps I've made to become green so far are: Switching to compact fluorescent blubs Taking shorter showers to conserve water Using / eating organic products (and if not organic, as natural and eco friendly as possible) Since we just purchased a house last fall, there are some things that didn't require too much of an adjustment. We lived in an apartment before, so we weren't used to lawn care of any kind. There was no switching to eco-friendly lawn care, we just started out with organic fertilizer. We weren't already used to the chemical stuff, so it wasn't a big deal. Also, as we're slowly making the house our own, we're picking the most eco-friendly solutions for home improvement and diy projects (eco-friendly paint and stuff like that). What I plan to do in the future is invest in solar power, use rain barrels to collect rain water (water conservation), start my own organic vegetable garden, and some other things I can't think of right now.

Also... Emily, I don't have pets so I can't help with pet care. Sorry. I'll ask around, though!
